It really does feel like Hamilton casting news is non-stop nowadays! Mandy Gonzalez will return to Broadway this October as Angelica Schuyler. She succeeds in demand Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry in the role; precise arrival and departure dates will be announced later. Meanwhile, two-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry is set to appear as Aaron Burr in the Chicago company of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning tuner.
Gonzalez created the role of Nina Rosario in Miranda's In the Heights; she can currently be seen on screen in Madam Secretary and Quantico. Henry, who made his Broadway debut in In the Heights, received Tony nods for Violet and The Scottsboro Boys; he has just concluded the Main Stem run of Shuffle Along.
In other Chicago news, Jonathan Kirkland, who recently appeared in the Encores production of Cabin in Sky and NBC’s Shades of Blue, will play George Washington. Performances begin on September 27 at the PrivateBank Theatre in Chicago.
Directed by Thomas Kail and featuring a book, music and lyrics by Miranda, Hamilton is inspired by the book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow and is running on the Main Stem at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The current Broadway cast also includes Javier Muñoz as Alexander Hamilton, Lexi Lawson as Eliza Hamilton, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Rory O’Malley as King George and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton. Michael Luwoye takes on the titular role once a week. Brandon Victor Dixon will begin performances as Aaron Burr in mid-August. We're still waiting on who will replace Daveed Diggs; the roles of Lafayette/Jefferson are currently being portrayed by long-time understudies Andrew Chappelle, Austin Smith and Seth Stewart.
